WARNING: This is a shallow thread

Today a friend of mine and I went to Louis Vuitton to check out the bags, it was my first time going into that store in Stockholm, and first of all, I just want to say that it is EXTREMELY niiiiiiiice that there's no follow John who is after you every single step you take in the store (compared to shanghai). Another observation I made was that the majority of people in the store were Asians, Hah!! Pretty surprising huh? (not)Ok, so I'm in doubt. Since I got my new job my financial situation is a bit too good to be true ^_^ and I feel like I would like to own a designer bag. A Speedy bag from Louis Vuitton is nice and classic, and it doesn't cost "much" 4100 kr here in Sweden which is about 4300 rmb in China, and a Speedy in China is about 6500 rmb, which is sick!!! They have no idea about PPP obviously.
After visiting Louis Vuitton we went to Gucci, nice to experience no follow John in this store either! Anyhow, Gucci has a bag that looks a bit like Speedy but with their logo, the bag is nice, and cost about the same as the Speedy bag. I don't know if I want Gucci or LV....
I always thought I would never buy a logo bag from LV or Gucci because those bags have been copied so many times, but now I'm in second thoughts.....or should I add 3000kr and buy a Mulberry Bayswater?

The Bayswater is a much nicer bag, but a much more expensive bag. The Gucci and the LV logo bags are too tacky, yuck. Why spend 4100 kr to advertise for G and LV, when you can spend twice as much for a small tasteful bush?
you know that Asians are the largest consumers of luxury goods, right? I don't find it surprising that you would see them in the stores.
anyway, sounds like a worthy investment. have you considered a Balenciaga? I think the shape/style would suit you...
Not to nitpick...but don't think about PPP as meaning that similar goods should cost the same, relatively, in each country in proportion to the purchasing power. The price of goods is dictated far more by things such as supply and demand, manufacturing and transportation costs, taxes and tariffs, local operating costs, and a host of other factors. A good example is the cost of cars - say a Porsche 911 which is priced from $90k to $160k depending on which country in the world you buy it in.
In fact, I think LVMH (parent company of Lous Vuitton) is brilliant to price goods the way they do in Asia. They know they have a captive market that will pay a premium for luxury goods and the thing is, they sell the bags faster than they can import them. In my opionion, LVMH is actually leaving money on the table in China and India and their opportunity cost in lost sales is tremendous.
*drools* me want me want!
it's up to you really, but i would get the Gucci...it just looks a tad nicer, and loads of ppl, espcially in Shanghai, have Speedy...
My opinion of the 2 bags, i would go wit LV. The material is much more durable.
don't you think taking all of your first pay cheque and blowing it on an LV bag is a bit of an asian clichee?
will lewis: yeah, that's what I thought before as well, that those bags are tacky. But when I wear it, I don't look tacky :) I think what you associates with the tacky is the girls with the fake bags, because that DOES really look tacky.
linda: of course I know that, balnciaga is overhyped and I think they are overrated, THAT bag I would consider to buy a fake one, but not a real one.
perfectsoul: you're right, I just wanted to point the big price diference between asia and europe regarding luxury products.
swiss james:
haha it's so true, last paycheck I bought a CK watch for about 2000 rmb, and now this coming paycheck I'm concerning to buy a bag....sighs, thinking about my comsumer behaviour and my mum's I feel really really bad.
yups, all the designerstores in europe, from germany to holland to belgium, france spain and italy are filled with chinese people :D
it's nice being the smallest minority in and richer than the majority of white people
:)
Swiss James: Don't think that what Siyan wants to do is an Asian thing! It's more of a girl (or ahem...shall I say woman) thing!
I don't criticize those who love LV or Gucci, but personally, I find those brands to be pretentious. I don't consider those brands to be "classy" or "fashionable" any more, simply because they are now too mass market. Its easy enough for someone who knows absolutely nothing about fashion and style to go into an LV store and buy a bag to show off. I guess what I'd really urge you to do is buy the bag, not the brand. Anyone remember the rainbow Murakami line? It sold like hot cakes, but I've never met a woman who can honestly say they would have bought it if wasn't an LV...
You obviously have style Siyan - I think you can do better! :D
I'm not a style afficionado in any way, but for me, the LV and Gucci bags are very blah. There's little to them except for the logo saturation and they are so remarkably non-individual. I think that the main reason they sell is because everyone knows they are expensive and so it is a coup to own a real one.
For what it's worth, I think Marc Jacobs makes really beautiful bags, with a lot more character. With those, you still get the financial one-upmanship (not accusing you of going for this) because they are still damn expensive and he is a well known designer.
