The Asian Community in Sweden

A friend I met in Shanghai came and visit me this weekend, it was so much fun to see her again. On Saturday we met up with another girl we often partied together with in Shanghai, it felt like good old times in Shanghai except the fact that we had to take the public transportation here in Sweden rather than just grab a Dazhong taxi.

Anyhow, we decided to go to a Chinese New Years Party, it was organized by an organisation called Fried Rice, it's a "community" targeted for Asians in Sweden. Besides the fact that I think it is silly to organize parties just for asians (talking about just making the segregation situation even worse), the party was a big meatmarket (Almost as worse as Windows). I'm also in awe how so many asians in Stockholm are totally isolated within their group of friends, and are totally not aware of the remaining Swedish culture that exists. Even if they moved here in an early age they still speak Swedish with a strong Chinese accent and only hang out with other asians. I'm not saying it's wrong but for sure I do think it's rather surprising.

The place was FULL of tacky girls. I really couldn't see the difference between those girls compared to Tong Ren Road girls..... The music was t-a-c-k-y! Commercial hiphop on the dancefloor (Shake ya ass, come home with me tonight - this kind of shit) and the girls were so excited in their small polyester dresses to grab the older men's attention. Brrrrr, never want to see that again.
I don't think I want to go to another Fried Rice party again, not for a while. BUT, there was one positive thing about this party; for the first time I felt tall, although I was wearing high platform shoes, I did recognize that I was taller than many guys even, that was fun :)

How is an Asian party in Sweden any different to a SH Expat party for expats in Shanghai or a Swedish gathering for Swedes living and working in Shanghai or indeed any kind of community that gather to enjoy common culture and interests?

Sounds a bit like you're looking down on your own people from up there in your platform shoes.

^ Woai,

very good post!
the difference is that the asians parties here in sweden are for asians who ARE in fact Swedish, they have swedish passports, grew up here and actually plan to live here for the rest of their lives.

i think that's the difference between temporary expats in shanghai who wants to find common friends.

It's the same in Australia. Many Chinese people living in Aus only socialise with other Chinese people, and often through Chinese christian church groups. It is pathetic. My wife, who came from mainland china 20 years ago is quite scathing about it. Mind you most of them don't drink, don't go to pubs or clubs, can't swim so don't go to our (beautiful) beaches - on the positive side they do not commit crimes but that is just because they are meek as sheep.

whoa. That's some b.s there Jim.

So what is your definition of not meek as sheep? Getting piss drunk and sexing every piece of meat on the block. No thanks.

I have different priorities in life.

I am going to sound p.c as hell, but why can't you people have some respect for others (Golden rule is a lie, ain't it)? Why is it always me, me, and me? It's their choice to live that kind of lifestyle. What are you doing in life that makes you feel so superior to these people? I mean are you finding the cure to cancer? Solving world hunger? WTF? Change yourself first, before making judgements. Stop being so damn judgemental. Sigh. But I don't blame you, most people in this world are materialistic, and shallow. Wait, did I just make a judgement???!!! :P

Please. You people are the down fall of Western civilization.

Good bye.

I need go take a few hits off the bong now...

wha wha wha makes no sense... maybe if he/she didn't do as many bong hits...

Having my parents not part of the Chinese family circle group thing has its good and bad points, but I can't say I have missed any part of it.

Perhaps my Chinese would be better if my parents had more Chinese friends?

Chinese parties are hit/miss, just like any other party. The skanky population probably didn't help, but I would probably be an optimist in the situation. Plus, commercial hiphop? kind of bomb to go crazy with...

I wonder why I always manage to write a fucking novel on your page, definetly not because of its grammar, but whatever it is what it is

Linda,

I make perfect sense. My main point was that people need to stop being so judgemental of others. Your way is not the one and only way. Get real. You are just a little brat, with very little real life experience.

Jim,

You sir, are you an idiot and a bigot. Your stereotypes are grossly offensive and have little basis in reality. You claim to be married to a mainland Chinese women...whom I genuinely feel sorry for. How she ended up with an uneducated, alcoholic, descendant of an ex-con I'll never know. Well, on the plus side you probably won't breed because we all know you Aussie bushmen are too busy making love to your sheep! How's that for stereotypes? :P

(don't take it too hard Jim...just playin with ya)

Sweden, unlike America, never claimed to be a 'melting pot', so i don't see anything wrong with defining Swedes by 'whiteness' or 'nordicness'. Forget it, Asian immigrants to Sweden will never be considered Swedes. Asian Americans have a hard enough time being considered American. You can pretty much forget about being Swedish.

P.S. Agreed, Jim is a fag. Maybe Asians wouldn't be 'meek as sheep' if you Aussies weren't so racist.

Hey there...

it was really funny to see that you were at my party in Stockholm. I am the creator of Fried Rice and have been organising Asian Parties in Sweden for more than 10 years. Back when i was a kid, i grew up in a small city, where chinese people were a scary minority. Everywhere i go was chink this and chink that. I accepted it, and thought that we are inferior to other people. Then I found that many Asians like me in other small cities felt the same. And one time, I went with my older brother to an Asian Party in the south of Sweden and BAM... there I saw all the people, looking like me, in the same situation as me, and NOT judging me. If it is wrong to have an urge to party and just be with people of your own peers, that is not judging you, poking fun of you, then I dont know what is right.

Soon after that, I started to create my own parties, and after 10 years, we are the largest organiser in Scandinavia, doing club events, fashion shows, song contests, beauty pageants. And people are sooooooo happy that there are events like this. Maybe most of us aint Asians any more, since we grew up here, so yes, we have some western culture inside us, but we are definitely not considered Swedes.

I am so sorry to hear that you didnt like our party, and that you dont wanna visit our parties again, but if you do, let me introduce to you to the people that are really thankful for having a place to go to and party, without being looked at all the time. In coutries like Sweden, were there are not that many Asians living, it's even more important with events like this, how else are we able to meet other Asians if we live in small cities were our family might be the only Asian family living.

Feel free to contact me if there is anything.

I know what shopgirl means.
There is a big difference between a 'Race' Party and a Cultural Celebration.
If it is cultural than it shouldn't matter who's invited to come learn (the Swedes and others could afford to learn about China). If it is racial, well its gonna suck because the only people that can get into that sort of thing have personal inferiority issues and only find solace in perceived collective power.
