Clubs are closing down :(

Lately a lot of cool places have been closing down in Shanghai. Yes, I do mostly spend time on the Bund, but sometimes it can be nice to just go to some place where the people don't expect you wearing that 2000 kuai dress or be sipping fresh apple martinis.
Some places that I have had the luck to discover while I was in Shanghai this summer was Pirates and 4 Live. Both closed down now. Pirates played pure electromusic, I know a DJ who would regurlary play his set there during weekends. Their drinks were cheap, the place looked cool, the people were h-o-t, a lot of hip French and Belgium people there. I really like that place, it was also close to my residence.
Another place that I discovered was 4 Live, a bar with two floors and a scene where different bands would play. I wasn't very impressed with 4 Live, but I think such a bar is still essential for Shanghai's nightlife scene. Although there is a place called The Shelter which I haven't visited yet. Another cool relaxing place was Tanghui, it closed already in March 2007. I always went there before going to bonbon.
I also heard DKD has closed down, an underground club on Huaihai Road :(
The good news is that those places will be repampered so they will be opening up again except that they will have new owners. That's better than nothing!

Do you mean "revamped"?

Anyway, sad to hear clubs close, but that's how business is, and opening a club is risky anyway, it is either a boom or bust...

some brazilian and his foriends they also like clubs and bars a lot, so they always drink in those amazing places in nights, but I wonder that why this brazalian he never personally invited his lady to meet in shanghai????? why this brazalian man he always asks his friends to do whatever he needs in life? why this brazalian man he couldn't really grow up in his last 3 years? So how long this brazalian man he needs his friends to help him in his rests? he wanna 5 years, 10 years or forever to do the things depending on his friends? Don't even think when the clubs can be opened again, but just to be independent to maintain the life by himself/herself, that will be great, I bet.
We nned friends, but we cannot depend on our friends forever, life should be yours/mine to deal with~~~~~~

I agree with Linda, it's hard to make clubs work here. The Laowai and Chinese crowds tend to be entirely different target markets (in terms of music and in terms of bar sales). Rent in the city is also really high that forces managers to have to comprise to try and attract both target markets which means that neither group can be entirely happy with the place.

There should be more nudity in Sh clubs, rather boring without it.

How much time have you actually lived in Shanghai, Siyan? It sounds like you have lived and currently live in Sweden? Shouldn't you be writing a blog about being Chinese and living in Sweden? What's with the Shanghai bit, does being a toddler in Shanghai make you an expert?
