Marks and Spencer opening in Shanghai!!!

After H&M and C&A's store openings in SH, another big retailer is entering the Mainland China market; Mark and Spencers, I know all the British expats will jump of joy, but god, Mark and Spencer??????? Their clothes are horrible, well at least 4 years ago they were horrible.

According to their website they say that their Values are Quality, service, innovation and trust. INNOVATION MY ASS!!!

Well, at least I'm smiling for their brits, heard their underwear can be nice though.
They are right now in a planning period, the store will open before summer 2008. Means I will have to go in there and check it out, probably not the clothes but the guys.

"Marks & Spencer, one of the most widely recognized chain stores in the U.K., plans to open its first store in China, despite a slow sales growth (WHAT A SUPRISE!!!!!!)

The British retailer will set aside £1.1 billion for global growth, with its major push into China and India next year, according to its latest statement. Leveraging on the existing markets in Hong Kong and Taiwan, the company will enter China with its wholly-owned stores. In addition, its first store in the country is expected to open by the end of March 2009, probably located in Shanghai.

China now is standing in front of the new scratch line and attracting a growing number of foreign investors. Besides, Chinese consumers are becoming more discerning, and pursuing branded suppliers with fantastic value. (YOU'RE NOT GOING TO BE HAPPY WITH M&S)

Economists suggest that investors should devise an ideal market entry strategy and execution plan before they can succeed in this huge potential market. (PFFFFTTT!!!!!)

Their cloths suck!
Their underwear is good - but the nice stuff is designed by a designer who is best known for a line of 'value' clothing found in a major UK super market so that kinda sucks.

But their food is amazing!

Didn't M&S pull out of Europe leaving only the food retailing because they sucked so bad at clothes?

Poor China!

M&S years ago were doing very well. However in current years they have been falling behind and recently have tried to reinvent themselves with little success.

What keeps them going is their food range, and i think partly their underwear also.

i really dont see how M&S can market themselves successfully in China or India. They arent a designer brand and they arent highstreet enough/cheap enough to compete with whats out there. I dont see what they have to offer.

their refund policy is awesome though... unfortunately i dont really buy anything from them apart from the occasional bra.

btw they used to cater for the older generations but then tried to market themselves for younger generations who spend more money on retail. However in doing this they lost their original market. ouch.

I know I'm opening myself up to ridicule, but actually M&S clothes are not shit. They are not fashionable, by any stretch of the imagination, but they do make good quality basics. If you're looking for the latest look, or a hot designer, then of course, it's pointless. But not everyone shops like that.

But let's be honest here, M&S were losing the clothes war a long time ago. It's in the food section where they excel, and if they are bringing a similar range of eats to Shanghai as they have in Bangkok, then I'll be straight in there. M&S food is pretty much second to none, in terms of high street outlets.

Obviously a lot of you haven't shopped in M & S over the past couple of years, if you had you would realise they do sell a lot of designer clothing under the "Autograph" label........their "cheaper" (for want of a better word) range is also very competitive within the market place and I think you should check it out......Welcom M & S.

I live in China and I'm pretty happy there'll be somewhere to get decent basic items, food AND clothing that is, for reasonable prices.

By decent, I mean doesn't fall apart in 10 washes, and doesn't cost me an arm and a leg.

Yay!

M&S is opening in a week here (oct 2nd)and its my bf's bday! Its true, when i saw the constructions site with the M&S Banner outside, it didnt really makes me happy or jump for joy! Im from Philippines and M&S has been in the philippines for a very long time, but younger people like me, (23 yrs old) dont really go there as much, coz just like everybody said, clothes are just not as fashionable as the other Shops around here or anywhere else!! Im a Size 00 and i cant find anything that will even fit me there or even think of buying from their collections. But, we are, for sure, looking forward to see what they will have on their food sections here! Lucky for us its very close by our house...

Let's just see what will happen when they open, im definitely sure, people will be crowding over that shop on the opening day!!! I hope they have Opening promotions as well!! Hihihi!!!
