Faith of Chinese hairdressers
A lot of times in hair salons, me and the hairdresser begin to talk a lot. Once we had a really long conversation. I asked about their situation, why she came to Shanghai, etc. I asked those repeating questions to her while she was working for WenfengSo what she told me really shocked me.
They start working at 8am until 11pm nonstop. On Weekends as well. They get one day free per month. They get free accomodation by Wenfeng (one of the large hairsalon chains).
That is basically it...and their monthly salary is around 900 rmb (a nice dinner for an evening).

There are none Shanghainese working in Wenfeng (I have never encountered a Shanghainese there)
My cousin's friend earns 5 rmb and some jiao each hour working in Pizza Hut as a first-timer.
Now...appreciate what you have!

Isn't it kind of exploitation then..i mean having to work those insanely long hours and still paying for uniforms and other things with your own salary(at least according to the link which you have posted).....probably these women deserve much better for the dedication they show...
and i don't think any westerners would bend and work under such rules....
So it is not an exaggeration to say that chinese are damn hardworking....
They don't really have a choice. The population is huge and steeped in poverty, and having a job is something to be thankful about, especially if you only have a high school diploma from a third or fourth tier city.
We are very blessed indeed to be living the life of an expatriate.

just continuing the discussion which cities in china would you call well developed ...is it only the first tier ones....so would that explain why no shaghainese(according to the author) are not found in such jobs....
I wouldn't say no Shanghainese, actually - just not the majority of them. Even first tier cities have the poor among them.
It's true that many Shanghainese have some money but the vast majority are still very very poor. It's easy to get a misrepresentative view because of the friends and places we hang out in which shields us from the other side of Shanghai.
